Human Design Notes- Type and Strategy

This post is  a simple recap of Type and Strategy in Human Design. There are 4 types with one type, the Generators having a subset called Manifesting Genrators. Two of the Types , Generators and Manifestors are ‘Energy’ Types meaning they have direct access to source energy withing their design if they follow their correct strategy and Authority (see here for info on Authority). The other two types are Non-Energy Types- the Reflectors and Projectors- they sample the energy of others and/or the environment and use their experiential wisdom to increase the understanding, awareness and productivity of the Energy Types.

To get a look at your own chart and be able to look at it while you read this go to:

If you are a Generator (70% of the population): Generators are the generative force of creation embodied- life itself is generated out of the sacral center. They are physically designed to respond to life from the moment they get out of bed in the morning til when they go to sleep. Your correct decision making mechanism is response- to act in response: when every decision is made in response, a Generator will know themselves. When you are not responding to Life according to your correct Strategy and Authority, you will find yourself in Frustration- so Frustration is a signal that tells you, you have been acting out of conditioning or your ‘not-self’ (all those white spaces in your chart).

As a Generator (unlike Manifestors) you have no idea where you are going until you respond- Generators are potentially the most powerful of all the types but unless you Know Yourself and understand how you work you can end up being the most frustrated people on earth.

Manifesting Generators (31% of population): These are Manifestors with a Generator Strategy: Love to be in the thick of life; greatest dilemma is to learn that their true power comes from waiting for opportunities to come to them….actively trying to pursue their goals and dreams they will encounter resistance and pain…when they relax their lives flow almost magically. They experience both Frustration and Anger when acting out of conditioning.

While Generators are here to know themselves,

Projectors are here to know and understand ‘the other’.

Reflectors are here to understand the environment and the impact of the environment on themselves and others.

Manifestors are here to to understand their impact upon the other.

If you are a Projector (21% of the population): Your correct strategy is to wait to be invited and to listen to your own authority to sense whether the invitation is correct for you. The Projector is here to see, know, understand and guide the other- particularly Generators. While their mind is busy getting to know others invitations begin to arrive. Trust you will be seen and recognised and the invitations will come. When you are feeling bitter it’s a signal to you that you have been acting out of conditioning or conditioned responses and not according to your correct strategy.

Reflectors are only 1% of the population and are deeply conditioned by the world around them, yet the Reflector is genetically designed as a vehicle to be totally conditioned. A Reflector is here to BE in the conditioned environment that operated cyclically through the lunar cycle. The Reflector strategy is to wait out the 28 day cycle of the moon before making any important decisions. If you are a Manifestor (only 8% of the population): You are specifically designed not to be controlled by anyone and you guys are the only true initiators… You are designed to act directly and to put things into motion…. Your correct strategy (which does not come naturally) is to inform those who will be affected by your actions of what you are about to do before you act. When you act without informing those who will be affected you will meet with resistance as people feel ignored or steam-rollered by you. When you are stuck in anger it’s a signal to you that you are not following your correct strategy and have been acting out of conditioning or ‘not-self’.

If you are a Manifestor (only 8% of the population):

Each type has a very differentiated way of being in the world environment; we’ve all been conditioned to the Manifestors way of being in this reality ie to believe we can initiate (indeed that to be successful in this reality you should inititate projects, ideals, relationships etc) when it is only 8% of the population (Manifestors) who have a body vehicle designed to initiate action. Generators respond; Proejectors wait for the invitation and Reflectors wait out a lunar cycle before making decisions.

The Throat Center in Human Design

The ability to grow into who we are designed to be, rather than react through the not-self to the demands made upon us by Society, is totally dependant on our uncovering and being our authentic self.

In the BodyGraph you will notice (go to and click on the ‘Get your free Rave Chart’ tab to see your own BodyGraph) that there are some gates that have a line coming off them- these are ‘activated gates’ in the chart and the way the gates are configured is what determines how the center operates, how we experience it within us and how it interacts with the people and environment around us.

Wherever there is a black or red line linking one center to another you will notice that both centers are coloured in (in Human Design language, both centers have ‘definition’ or are defined). In some places you will notice that there is a line that goes half way or a little way out towards another center, but it’s not connected… these are known as Active gates if they are within a coloured in center and Dormant gates if within an undefined (white) center.

Human Design: the Science of Differentiation- Different kinds of Authority

Ra Uru Hu once said: “If anyone ever asks you what is Human Design, you tell them it‘s about learning how to make a decision as yourself. That’s all. Truly, this is what this knowledge is about; Know how to make a decision as yourself.”

What does it mean to ‘make a decision as yourself’? An important part of Human Design understanding is to grasp the idea of ‘the not-self’. The ‘not-self’ is all those centers where you are ‘open’; ie it’s the white spaces in your chart (you can get a look at your chart by going to and putting your birth details into the system under the tab ‘Get your free rave chart’)

The centers which are coloured in are known as ‘defined’ centers in Human Design and they are what you can rely on consistently: the open centers are open to the conditioning of others who are defined in those centers or to the movement of universal forces or influences which condition the centers at different times over time- therefore they are not consistent within you.

The Human Design System – The Science of Differentiation

The Human Design System synthesizes the ancient observational systems of Astrology, the Chinese I Ching, the Hindu Brahmin Chakras and the Tree of Life Zohar/Kabbalist tradition, with the contemporary science of Quantum Mechanics, Astronomy, Genetics and Biochemistry. It is a logical, empirical and practical system. Human Design doesn’t ask you to believe anything; it merely invites you to explore and experiment with the mechanics of your nature and your evolving consciousness, and so find out for yourself what works and what doesn’t work for you.

Within Human Design each person is seen as a distinct differentiated being and in precisely describing the conditioning fields we assume ourselves to be (Not-self), each person is empowered to move beyond that imaginary construct towards what is truly consistent within them.

The Human Design BodyGraph is a map to navigate by: with a chart reading you learn the difference between your Personality Crystal (which is who you think you are) and your Design Crystal (which is unconscious and manifests the biogenetics of the body, or your physical form). The Personality Crystal is referred to as ‘Passenger consciousness’, while the Design Crystal is known as the vehicle or Form consciousness. The relationship between the personality and the design crystals is like a backseat passenger (Personality) who rides in a vehicle (Design). The whole is operated and navigated by the Driver or the Magnetic Monopole (located in the Sternum area). A passenger is meant to be relaxed and watch the scenery go by, not fight with the driver for control of the vehicle- passenger consciousness has no idea where the vehicle is going or how to get there.

This information, although complex, can be reduced to some very simple yet effective insights and awareness. A basic Human Design reading will tell you what your Type, Strategy and Authority is, and thus enable you to begin to recognize when you are making mind based decisions as opposed to relying on your Strategy and Authority (body based?). The old being was Mind (Outer) directed, where as the new transitional form is inner directed: it’s useful when following your innate inner direction to have some guidelines.

Useful though the mind is, it is not really the best way of making decisions- relying on your correct Strategy (dependant on your type) and your Authority, which is a body based response to an opportunity or the flow of life, is the correct way to make decisions. The Vehicle (body) of the being holds the key to making decisions that are correct for the individual concerned.

The Human Design System Chart

Example Human Design System BodyGraph

According to Human Design there are four distinct Types: Manifestors, Generators, Projectors and Reflectors. Knowing your type informs you of your correct Strategy and Authority. Type refers to your body, genetics and aura (we are not talking of psychological or personality types here). Type reveals a particular way of operating energetically and is expressed through the Aura.

The four types consist of two energy types- who have an ability to consistently generate or initiate energy (Generators and Manifestors) and two non-energy types (Projectors and Reflectors) who do not have constant access to their own generating and manifesting capacity. Following one’s strategy maximizes your available energy potential.

“Auras are the way we connect to and are experienced by the other.”

Ra Uru Hu

In human Design, Strategy refers to a way of being in the world without resistance: a means that aligns us with our unique geometry (in the overall flow of the totality), and supports the process of becoming our authentic self. Strategy is based on the way the vehicle (body) is designed to operate on all levels.

“Strategy accesses the unique ways energy is designed to flow through each person’s BodyGraph, and ultimately determines the way our health, sexuality, relationships and life purpose play out.”

Each Type has a correct Strategy and a signature theme that plays out when you begin living your Type’s Strategy. For example, the Generator’s Signature note or theme when living according to their Strategy and Authority is Satisfaction. Each Type also has a ‘not-self’ theme, which manifests when not living according your Strategy and Authority. For a Generator the note that tells you that you are not living according to your Strategy and Authority is Frustration.

The Generator’s Strategy is to Respond and when living out of response according to their Authority their signature note is satisfaction; their ‘not-self’ theme, or the indicator that they are living out of conditioning, is Frustration. Generators make up 70% of the population; Generators often live like they are Manifestors and try to initiate ‘good ideas’ from their mind, thus creating lots of frustration as they are designed to respond, not initiate. For Generators sleep will not come until they have burned off that days supply of energy.

The Manifestor’s Strategy is to inform; they have closed and repelling auras and their signature is Peace when living according to their type and their ‘not-self’ theme which indicates when they are living out of the conditioning, is Anger. Manifestors make up 8% of the population and are the only type that can initiate in flow with their design.

Projectors and Reflectors are non-energy types (Projectors comprise about 21% of the population while Reflectors are 1%) and they use their experiential wisdom about energy to increase the understanding, awareness and productivity of the Energy types.

The Projectors correct strategy is to wait for the invitation, their signature note is Success and their ‘not-self’ theme is Bitterness. When they find themselves feeling or expressing bitterness they know they have not been living out of their correct Strategy and Authority but have been allowing themselves to be conditioned by the culture or those around them. A very specific part of the Projectors role here on earth is to guide others by knowing how to ask the right questions.

Reflectors process and experience energy in an unusual way that is quite different from the other types, which means that they live by a different set of rules. Their signature note is surprise and their Strategy is waiting out a whole lunar cycle before making any important or big decisions. Their ‘not-self’ theme is disappointment.

Next week I will talk about the different kinds of Authority.

Mindsets and Heartsets

A commentary on resources I have experienced that nourish the heart in a world that seems bent on educating and changing our mind; all so it can sell us something that in all probability we don’t even need.

In this last week I’ve been doing some research into personal development resources online amongst other stuff and I discovered and what a resource he is! Scrolling through his blog, checking out the quality I found him referring to ‘heartsets’ (ok so it was within a blog post that was all about masters and slaves as a means of getting the support he needs for his work, but no matter). This is refreshing to me, everywhere I turn especially online right now I am reading about mindsets, PJ McClure, get the right Internet Marketing Mindset etc and while its true that I come from a Spiral Dynamics background so my filters will be set to see mindsets everywhere, I had never, before reading Steve’s post heard anyone refer to a ‘heartset’, though I have been reading Thomas Moore’s The Education of the Heart which might amount to the same thing.

Everyone seems to be talking about mindsets and changing your mindset or ‘getting the right mindset’ for whatever, manifesting a relationship or creatively fulfilling work, yet no one truthfully acknowledging just how difficult it is to change your mindset, (try it, there’s that bugger of your subconscious self which frequently betrays you by not following in your desired footsteps (or should I say ‘headsteps’) and spewing out the same old unconscious crap: the difference between the one’s ideal self (who you aspire to be, or ‘think’ you are) and your actual self, how you actually behave under the ‘load’ we sometimes call ‘life’. So I was tickled pink at the contemplation of ‘heartset’ and what Pavlina might mean by that: guess I will have to keep reading his blog.

I guess the truth is we need to be aware of both heartset and mindset for effective living and personal growth. Much of what is out there in the ‘personal development market is essentially advertising ‘follow this system’ or ‘do what I have done’ and change your mindset and you too will find success or happiness or fulfilment or ‘the one’. In terms of what I imagine a ‘heartset’ to refer to (‘where is your heart? for there will be your treasure also’) my experience tells me that getting to know my own heart and how it might be ‘set’ is less about trying to change it and more about accepting the truth of it and what I find therein. We are not encouraged to be in the vulnerability of our heartspace in much of our current consumer addicted culture. The Journey through the heart takes time, as does truly getting to know yourself, and there are many distractions, cul de sacs and a huge Abyss to get across if you want to place your trust in Spirit as opposed to ‘the world’ (material reality).

I’ve been doing this journey through the seven levels, or the seven mysteries for over 6 years now. this is my third and half time round. This journey is for those who want to consciously make the journey from Matter to Spirit. It’s not for everyone; it IS for me and a few others a very effective way of developing spiritual discipline and overcoming blocks in your life through focussing on creating a structure through which, beginning with the physical material reality of your life, at the base, you can journey or work your way up the levels (at the rate of a level per month to give you time to integrate the journey), also called chakras. The ‘big stuff’ or the blocks to manifesting or bringing one’s vision to earth, where it can be ‘grounded in form’ (or even ‘owning’ one’s vision) are often to be found in the heart, or at the very least show up there.

Blocks in the heart can affect both the solar plexus and the throat, can indeed show up in any of the other levels for in truth the levels are all deeply entangled and interconnected. Also if one doesn’t allow oneself to honour what is in the heart by giving it expression whether verbally or through art, or song, the throat will become clogged or blocked. We need to express what is in our hearts: from the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas we are told:

“If you bring forth what is in your heart it will save you; what you do not bring it forth, it will destroy you”.

Failure to express the truth of our hearts often results in dis’ease, fragmentation and losing one’s sense of grounding. Shock often has the effect of knocking us out of our bodies (I wrote about this elsewhere in the physiology of stress) and thus we become de ‘based’ and is most keenly felt at the heart.

Too often, we are not taught or supported to face the heart and how to be with everything therein. It is here on the wall’s of the heart’s cave that everything we have ever experienced, felt, decided or acted upon is engraved (see article on The Cave at the Heart). If those events and experiences still hold any pain or are left unresolved in the sense that we haven’t come to terms with the experience or made peace with it and somehow made it our own (‘got’ the learning or ‘harvested’ the ‘upside’ – even in the darkest of experiences there is an upside, though it may take some serious inner work to uncover the perspective which might be most fruitful) as opposed to something that ‘happened’ to us or to which we still have some sense of being victim to.

Consequently many of us avoid opening up the ‘pandora’s’ box at the heart, or if we do, we try to focus on the ‘light’ stuff, the stuff that brought is joy for there is not much in modern culture to indicate or hint that the ‘dark stuff’ has its place and it’s value too. The dark stuff needs to be mined so that we might discover the ‘acres of diamonds within’ instead of always looking outside ourselves for answers or gold or other riches of whatever description.

The reason I have chosen to make this spiritual journey from matter to spirit three and a half times (never got beyond the solar plexus the first time, but that’s another story- in fact the very first time I never got beyond the sacral level- clearly I have had major ‘issues’ getting to earth, becoming fully present and embodied, no doubt because I have had to face a lot of ‘dark stuff’ and reconcile myself to it’s often unconscious manifestations and it’s tendency to ‘self-sabotage’ as it’s tired to ‘grab’ my attention and focus in one way or another. There is much healing to be had within the ‘dark stuff’, typically the very stuff we spend so much time and energy investing in avoidance is the very place we need to go to clear the blocks.

‘Every upset is a set up’ claims the Course in Miracles, and whilst that’s a ‘high’ thought to ‘plug into’ or to ‘hold’ given we are not encouraged to be upset, or even allowed to be upset, or to express the upset, there is much fear around being upset and little recognition of the inherent ‘gift’ within it.

Philip Pullman has written a great series on the ‘dark stuff’, the Northern Lights Trilogy; a fantastic modern myth around the dark stuff and the fight between the ‘Authority’ and the battle of good and evil for the hearts and minds of the people of earth. ‘Dark stuff’ in his books refers to the latest findings of Quantum Physics and he creates a wonderful series of parallel realities which the heroes and villains can travel between through various means or ‘doorways’ most of which were cut by the ‘Subtle Knife’. In his books, the ‘dark stuff’ has the invisible energy of the universe within it….

For one reason or another we are frequently afraid of what’s in our hearts; it might be that it is within the heart that we hide our emotional truth about our experiences or the reality of our current lives: it takes courage for example to face realisations like we are deeply unhappy within our relationship or with the reality of our lives as it is currently manifesting, or simply to face the inner truth of some incident between ourselves and another that has perhaps upset us more than we want to admit, so we tried pretending it ‘doesn’t matter’ or it’s not important’ but in truth it has affected our ability to relate to both ourself and the other and no amount of sweeping it under the proverbial carpet will help.

We need courage and determination to really ‘be with’ the stuff of the heart. in order to fully trust spirit in my life I have had to go into my heartspace and clear out the debris, empty myself and even upon occasion rub salt in the wounds I find there to stop them festering and enable healing. Salt is a great antiseptic, interesting that the homeopathic remedy, Nat Mur is made form table salt and it one of the primary remedies for resentment, for those who have been so hurt that they’ve built a wall around their heart and no one can reach them there. I have learned to be willing to allow myself to be ‘upset’ for the information within the ‘upset’ has given more back in the form of greater self knowledge, healing and awareness than anything the ‘embarrassment’ of being upset has taken away. Willingness to allow the full range and gamut of my feelings to be conscious and to not judge them has done more to facilitate the healing process than anything else.

Judgement and coercion close the heart down. If I want to make the journey from matter to spirit and put my trust in my connection to Spirit/Source/the Universe/God or whatever name you prefer to call it by, then I must cross the Abyss at the heart. That self same Abyss that both Blake and Dante refer to in their wonderful poetry.

I find Thomas Moore’s writings (see really helpful for being with the heart. Indeed his book, The Education of the Heart is an attempt to provide resources to nourish the heart in a world that seems bent on educating and changing our mind; all so it can sell us something that in all probability we don’t even need.

I have discovered it’s impossible to enter the stillness without being able to be with the heart authentically; I can avoid what is in my heart by pushing it away and pretending I’m ok with whatever, but this costs me in the end, in terms of both emotional and physical discomfort or dis’ease. Besides, if I am not willing to be with all of me, how can I expect or hope anyone else to be?

Skeleton Woman & the Life-Death-Life Cycle of Relationships

This is a great story (told by Clarissa Pinkola Estes in Women Who Run With the Wolves) that holds some profound wisdom for those of us engaged with relationship in modern times.

Pinkola Estes talks a lot about the wildish nature of Woman and how it has been neglected and driven underground:

‘We have seen the feminine instinctive nature looted, driven back and overbuilt.’ [Read more...]

Forgiveness is the Key to Happiness

Both Catherine Ponder and the Course in Miracles are clear on this, and so too are numerous spiritual traditions throughout the world.

Easier said than done, though, in my experience the healing release that comes through forgiveness is a journey: much as I would like to just decide I’m going to forgive and let go of all the hurt, pain or resentment I might be feeling, I often find I have unconsciously picked up the burden of holding the resentment later.

Just like ‘Healing is in the questing and the practice, not in a single idea’ (Clarissa Pinkola Estes), so too is Forgiveness. Added to which, if you were brought up Christian or Catholic and ‘made’ to forgive your siblings or your peers before you were ever ready to even think about it, the very word may well just be anathema to you. Lessons From Las Vegas 12: Culture is Key

The final element of the Flawless Living Operating System (FLOS) is an acknowledgement of just how important culture is. You could be a highly capable person, yet if your own motives and values naturally oppose the culture you live within, being both happy AND successful will prove to be a tremendous challenge. [Read more...]

Lessons From Las Vegas 11: Recalibrate Often

This element is relatively simple to understand, although it may not be so easy to do: to recalibrate defined is to adapt, amend or correct mid-course; to mutate, revamp, shift or transform. It is one thing to be clear on your purpose, your strengths (talents + knowledge + skills + experience), it is another essential to know where you are now and where you want to be and yet another to know the values that matter to you. Keeping score is essential to take the guesswork and fantasy (pretense) out and to make sure one’s feet are planted firmly on the ground. [Read more...]

Lessons From Las Vegas 10: Keep Score

Continuing with the 12 elements of Flawless Living that I was immersed in during my Vegas trip last August, I arrive at element 10, possibly my least favourite, because I don’t do it naturally and all my associations with keeping score seem to be connected with the pain of keeping track of objective metrics. At a very basic level Keeping Score is as simple as balancing the chequebook and being aware of one’s financial reality: are my incomings exceeding my outgoings on a month to month basis, or am I steadily getting into ever increasing debt/overdraft?
